One of our favorite parts of the Superbowl Game isn't the game at all; it's the commercials. And, while some people might consider the abundance of automobile commercials annoying, we have to argue that, this year, some of them were extremely entertaining. Gone are the days of mediocre automobile advertising, especially for the Volkswagen brand. The company's "The Force" commercial made the top spot on AdWeek's "Ten Best Commercials of 2011" list.
The commercial combines two well-loved ad themes-children and Star Wars - and combines them to create what can only be labeled a perfectly-paced masterpiece. The viewer sees a child dressed in a complete Darth Vader suit and follows his/her progress throughout a suburban home as he tries (and fails) to bend inanimate objects to his "forceful" will. When the child's father returns home, he races to the driveway to attempt the same feat on the family's 2012 Volkswagen Passat. The child is amazed when the Passat obeys his orders. He doesn't know that his father has used the remote starter key from inside the house.
This engaging commercial ignited a social media frenzy. With almost 45 million views on YouTube, nearly seven billion impressions worldwide, and more than $100 million in earned media, the ad is a charming celebration of fun. It's no surprise that it made AdWeek's number one spot.
The Volkswagen brand knows how to celebrate the small joys in life. This zest for being is comparable to the feeling people get when taking a Sunday afternoon drive in a new 2012 Volkswagen vehicle.
