Perhaps you tried to build one in science class, or at the very least saw the Mythbusters episode where they construct them, but the hover car has long been a fascination with people in the greater Dulles area and across the world. Well, it's something Volkswagen is interested in too, and instead of fantasizing about the prospect of new Volkswagen vehicles floating around, they are actually looking into ways to make it possible.

Drawing up some generated photos of what a hover car might look like, Volkswagen is in the very early stages of developing something that seems straight out of science fiction. In the mock ups shown online, we see nothing that resembles vehicles like the Volkswagen Jetta. Instead, the Volkswagen Hover Car as it's called is spherical from front to back, with the sides flattened and acting as driver and passenger doors.

The Hover Car is operated by joystick controls, and to stay on track, Volkswagen says that electromagnetic strips would have to be installed on the streets of Sterling, Tyson's Corner and beyond to keep the concept cars on line.

This is all in the very early stages, but it's cool to see Volkswagen continue to innovate and push the boundaries of thinking, and perhaps one day making a hover car possible. The German automaker has already developed technology that allows for auto-driving of cars, and it's been approved in Nevada, so we think pulling off the Volkswagen Hover Car concept is very doable for VW.
