Production of the Iconic Beetle Ends in 2019

2019 beetle

After almost seven decades in production, Volkswagen will end production of its iconic Beetle in North America. This past July, Beetle production at the VW plant in Mexico came to a close after two special edition models were created. Lindsay Volkswagen of Dulles has the details on these special edition models and the history of the beloved Beetle.

History of the Volkswagen Beetle

The Volkswagen Beetle first made its debut in Germany back in 1938. It made its way to the United States 11 years later. The Beetle became a pop culture icon and featured in the 1968 Disney film, “The Love Bug,” as well as artwork by Andy Warhol and the “Abbey Road” album cover. For the next 30 years, the Beetle was a staple of the Volkswagen lineup, but it was removed from the U.S. market in 1979.

In 1998, the “New Beetle” once again was sold in the United States. In 2012, to help the vehicle appeal to more male drivers, it received a complete redesign and featured a flatter roof, a more streamlined silhouette, a navigation system, and a more spacious trunk.

The Special Edition Beetles

What can drivers expect from the special edition Beetle models? These special editions are offered as both a coupe or a convertible. Along with the standard color options, there are also beige and blue hues unique to these limited edition cars. You will also see more chrome and new wheels. Inside the cabin, there is also three-color ambient lighting.

Will the Beetle ever make a comeback? While there are no plans in the works, it has not been ruled out for sure in the future. We will just have to wait and see whether the Beetle will return to the American roadways. In the meantime, the automaker is shifting some of its focus to its lineup of electric vehicles.
