Volkswagen is still waiting to release official 2018 Atlas towing and payload capacity specs for the newest member of the VW lineup. But let’s take a look at what we do know and what we might expect from the all-new 2018 Volkswagen Atlas.
Equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged and direct-injection TSI® four-cylinder engine out of the gate, the base model Atlas puts out 238 horsepower. The larger 3.6-liter VR6 engine can put out 280 horsepower. Both engine options are coupled with an eight-speed transmission that will undoubtedly be more beneficial when towing thanks to its smooth shifts.
If you’re looking to tow more with the 2018 Atlas, the most attractive engine option will be the larger 3.6L V6 with additional horsepower. With 4MOTION® all-wheel drive, drivers can count on added traction and grip when towing.
What could we expect from the 2018 Atlas?
The 2017 Touareg also features an 8-speed automatic transmission, as well VW 4MOTION® all-wheel drive. The Touareg can tow 7,716 lbs when properly equipped with optional towing accessories. The Touareg also features the a 3.6L 280-hp engine.
The Atlas will be larger than any other Volkswagen on sale in the United States. So, while we expect its towing capacity to be similar to the Tiguan, there are a lot of other factors in play that will determine the real payload and towing capacity.
The Atlas adds another row of seating, stretching its capacity to seven adult (plus luggage). The third-row of seating can easily be accessed even when there’s a child seat in the second row.
You’ll be able to test drive the 2018 Atlas this spring right here at Lindsay Volkswagen! Towing and payload capacity, as well as EPA estimated fuel economy will be released before the Atlas this spring.
