You can use your key to manually unlock the door to your vehicle if your VW key fob is dead, but some models vary with how to open your vehicle with a dead fob. See more below on how to open your vehicle if your battery for the VW key fob is dead, and always refer to your owner’s manual for full information.
Some models have a cap that seals and protects the lock cylinder on the door. Underneath this cap is a notch meant to be popped off, revealing the lock cylinder. If your model has this cap, insert the key into the notch below the cap on your driver’s side, and then pull the cap tab off with your free hand. You can then insert your key to open your vehicle.
Some models like the VW CC and the VW Touareg have no bayonet key to open the door. Instead, there is a hidden plastic key inside of the fob in case your VW key battery is dead. To access this key, press the button on the side of the fob and pull on the keyring loop at the top of the fob to pull out the emergency key. The emergency key will allow you to unlock the door but not start the vehicle. Place the keyfob into the ignition slot to start the vehicle.
Note: For other Volkswagen models with keyless access, if the fob battery is low and the push-button start is not working, hold the fob against the steering column and press the start button. Doing this will allow you to start your vehicle.
